I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health and spirits.
As TIC is in the midst of its 39th year, serving over 30,000 listeners, we are faced with our biggest funding crisis to date. The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind has chosen to no longer fund our service effective June 30, 2017. This means that TIC hasn’t had a source of revenue for five months. This cut in funding is because the Commissioner for MCB feels that our service is outdated and no longer relevant. However, we hear every week from our listeners and supporters that this could not be further from the truth. We often forget how easily we can read a newspaper, attend a conference, or find information on a topic we are interested in learning more about. But for our over 30,000 unique listeners, many of whom are over the age of 65, access to information is just a little bit harder and this is where we work to fill in the gap. The good news is Governor Baker and the Executive Office of Health and Human Services have committed to support TIC for the current fiscal year by providing 50% of the funding we normally receive. Our legislators continue to work to secure the full funding needed for TIC to operate but, until then, we work to increase our private fundraising so we can continue to provide unique and pertinent information via the human voice to enrich the daily lives of our listeners.
2017 brought amazing growth in our listenership, volunteers, and collaborations. TIC covered and broadcast live from many events such as Governor Baker’s speech from the Massachusetts Council on Aging’s Fall Conference. TIC had the privilege of hosting TIC Awareness Day at the State House in October, which was attended by over 70 legislators, listeners, and volunteers. We created the TIC Radio and Podcast Players, a monthly production of radio theater performed by TIC volunteers. And our 25th Annual Wine Dinner Fundraiser raised over $65,000, a 48% increase from last year’s fundraiser.
2017 has been such a successful year and even with our funding crisis, we look ahead to the future. In 2018 we hope to create a South Shore Low-Vision Group. Hosting these groups at TIC allows for those unable to attend to have access to the information via our live broadcasts. TIC will also work to read every local newspaper and have our programming available on every local community cable channel in Massachusetts (there are 351 towns in MA!)
We will continue to keep you all informed through our monthly newsletter on new successes as we diversify or programming and recruit more listeners. Half of our funding has been promised but that amount does not cover our operating costs and certainly does not allow room for growth.
To continue to serve more people, your donations and support have never been more important and appreciated.
We wish you and your family and friends a blessed and safe holiday season!
